Engineered stones have been a preferred choice in Australia for decades. However, the country is also among the first nations to impose a ban on the production, supply, and installation of engineered stone to protect workers, given the rise in silicosis cases. This ban was enacted after years of campaigning by public health activists, unions, and healthcare professionals to safeguard the health and well-being of those who work with engineered stone for kitchen countertops.
As a result, Australia established a task force to address the pressing issue of rising silicosis cases. Fast forward to 2023, when Safe Work Australia published a statement recommending a ban on the use of engineered stone, enacting a national ban with a deadline of July 2024.
What is Silicosis?
According to the American Lung Association, silicosis is a type of “pulmonary fibrosis.” It is a lung disease caused by breathing small particles of crystalline silica. Common symptoms include coughing, scarring, and swelling. Silicosis often affects people who work in the mining and construction sectors.
An Engineered Stone Provider Fined for Risking Worker’s Life
A fine of $375,000 has been imposed on the engineered stone provider Edstein Creative Pty Ltd. in Australia for risking a worker’s life by exposing them to silica dust over the course of nearly seven years. According to Safe Work Australia, this exposure resulted in severe illness due to the company’s failure to minimize exposure to crystalline silica dust. The provider pleaded guilty to not implementing reasonable measures to prevent silica dust inhalation and to continuing the cutting, grinding, and polishing of engineered stone.
“Workplace Safety Comes First” Should be the Ultimate Corporate Mantra
The provision of a safe work environment for all workers in every industry should be a cornerstone of every organizational strategy. One of the main elements of a safe workplace is maintaining optimal indoor air quality, as people spend a significant portion of their day at work.
Industries such as cutting and mining should comply with the ban, as doing so demonstrates genuine care for the welfare of their workers. In addition to considering alternatives, implementing protective measures is essential. An air purifier can help achieve optimal indoor air quality.
A high-performing air purification device, like Euromate Pure Air’s, cleans the environment by capturing airborne silica dust particles. If you want to learn more about our products, please get in touch with our indoor air quality experts.
