The Cancer Risk in Your Workshop: Why Ignoring Wood Dust is No Longer an Option

A wood workshop is associated with arts, craftsmanship, and creation. However, an invisible threat lurks in the air and is often overlooked: wood dust. What may seem like a simple layer of fine dust on benches, equipment, and machines is, in fact, a serious health hazard. Whether you are a part-time DIYer or work in a wood workshop all day long, it is time to confront the reality. Wood dust cancer is real and ignoring it is no longer an option.

According to the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), wood processes such as cutting and sanding release airborne wood particles that pose a potential health hazard. Inhaling these tiny particles can lead to serious issues such as “allergic respiratory symptoms, mucosal and non-allergic respiratory symptoms, and cancer.”

What Is Wood Dust and Formaldehyde

Wood dust is released as a result of woodworking processes such as manufacturing, sanding, cutting, and sawing. It can settle on surfaces and become airborne again when disturbed during activities like cleaning, sweeping, or removal.

On the other hand, formaldehyde is a pungent, colourless gas used in adhesives and resins for the manufacturing of composite wood products. These include plywood, particleboard, laminated veneer lumber, and fiberboard.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists several health issues caused by the inhalation of formaldehyde, including nausea, irritation of the eyes and throat, and difficulty breathing. Exposure to higher concentrations may also trigger asthma attacks, with evidence showing it can cause cancer in both animals and humans.

Wood Dust Cancer: The Facts

Who would’ve thought wood dust could lead to cancer? It sure is a strange thought, but it is backed by evidence. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), wood dust and formaldehyde released as a result of wood works are classified as Group 1 carcinogens.

Prolonged human exposure to these particles may result in cancer. A study concluded that 16 per cent of the nose and nasal sinus cancers in men and 2 per cent in women could be due to exposure to wood dust and hardwoods like beech, oak and mahogany.

A study conducted in 2010 on Australian workers concluded that 14 per cent of these workers were exposed to wood dust, while 13 per cent were exposed to industrial fumes (including formaldehyde). An Australian law agency cited a case of hardwood dust inhalation involving a man who was diagnosed with severe sinonasal carcinoma.

The tumour resulted in severe pain, damage to the frontal lobe, and impaired brain function. Such cases raise awareness and highlight the urgent need for effective controls to prevent long-term harm.

How to Protect Yourself and Employees

First and foremost, it is necessary to monitor your workshop’s indoor air. Work Health and Safety regulation authorities have rolled out 50 states monitoring to identify any possible health risks. The following table is extracted from the Cancer Council website; however, please note that standards and exposure limits are subject to change over time.
