Houseplants are a great addition to upgrade the aesthetics of your home and add a touch of nature to it. However, a majority of homeowners believe that houseplants are able to purify indoor air. Whether these claims hold any ground or are they just a myth. Let’s discuss.

Air - Purifying Indoor Plants – Reality or Myth?

NASA conducted a study in 1989 to investigate different ways to purify the air in space stations and discovered that the presence of plants did purify air in a limited and closed environment. Other research studies have also proved that plants eliminate gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the discovery does not apply to our indoor environment because they are not closed chambers like space stations. Therefore, the simple answer is No. Houseplants don’t actually clean your indoor space.

Another study conducted by Nature.com in 2019 reported no scientific evidence to support the claim that plants efficiently eliminate air contaminants from indoor spaces. The research study further stated that an effect is only possible in higher concentrations. These concentrations are pretty much unreasonable because in order to feel a noticeable difference in air quality, you would require up to 1,000 plant pots per 10 square feet.

Concrete evidence from another study published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology states that houseplants can remove toxins only in a small gaseous chamber that doesn’t mimic a typical house or office space.

So, a long-held belief you wish were true is now busted. There are still many websites on the internet claiming top indoor plants that remove toxins from the indoor environment. However, this is not true.

Scaling up on air-purifying indoor plants and turning your space into a forest is not a solution. There are ways we can implement to notice a measurable difference in indoor air quality.

Let’s discuss:

Improved Ventilation

Poor ventilation is one of the most common sources of bad indoor air quality. Allowing fresh air to ventilate the space allows the dilution of air contaminants. However, opening windows and doors to exchange stale air with fresh air can also be risky. Outdoor pollution is also a threat and can further degrade air quality instead of improving it. Therefore, the ideal solution is to install an air purifier. EuromateVisionAir Blue Line and Pure Air Shield (PAS) 3300 are two of the most popular air filtration equipment for residential and corporate settings. They both feature high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) that works by eliminating small airborne particles through a fine mesh.

Routine Cleaning

A daily cleaning schedule is fundamental to improving indoor air quality. Make a dusting, moping and vacuuming schedule to keep dust, dust mites and airborne particles at bay. The presence of these particles in the indoor environment is a threat to human health and can trigger allergy symptoms. Moreover, keep your air ducts clean and have a preventive maintenance schedule for HVAC equipment from a reliable service provider.

Install an Air Purifier

Instead of purchasing costly air-purifying indoor plant pots, make a one-time investment in a high-quality and efficient air purifier. Air filtration technology is a must-have in this era where fighting with pollution has become extremely difficult. The good news is that Euromate offers a cutting-edge and innovative line of air cleaners that are smart and highly effective in collecting contaminants, toxic gases, odors and airborne particles.

Clean Air Filters

Dirty air filters within your air conditioning systems can degrade air quality. Regularly clean the air filter for fresh air and maximum performance.

It is an easy job that you can conveniently do at home by taking out the filter, washing it and putting it back when dried.

Limit Scents

While scented candles and air fresheners add a pleasant vibe to your home, they can degrade indoor air quality. Shocked, right? Some scented items emit toxic volatile organic compounds that are hazardous to human health.

Long-term exposure to VOCs can lead to several health problems, such as headaches and irritation in the eyes, nose and throat. Try avoiding the use of these products, and if you can’t, always ventilate the space thoroughly after use.
